Unwilling / No confidence to speak up in lessons leading to low oral participation points

Possible CAUSES

  1. Low self-esteem

  2. Afraid that your questions/answers are incorrect

  3. Afraid that people would judge them

  4. Feel that it is a waste of your time/effort

As a RESULT

> Reluctant to speak up during lessons and contribute to class discussions

> Does not want to ask or answer questions

the Negative Emotion

Disappointed when they receive low oral participation points

What you CAN DO

1) Trust yourself and believe in your answers or questions.

There is nothing wrong with getting the incorrect answers.

Nobody is perfect, and everyone will be wrong sometimes.

2) Build up confidence in yourself.

Try asking/answering one question every day, and gradually increase the number of questions asked/answers given.

This will help increase your self-esteem in speaking up.

Eventually asking questions become a healthy habit and OP points will go up

3) Learn to ignore what others think of you.

It is never wrong to contribute to class discussions, so do not be afraid to speak up.

What you think about yourself is more important than what others think about you.

4) If people criticise you for not speaking up, ignore them.

Instead, treat the criticism as a motivation for you to become more confident in speaking up.

At the end of the day, you are the one achieving the desired results
