HANDLING NEGATIVE EMOTIONS
IN HCI

Unable to balance one’s workload (homework, project)
Possible CAUSES
-
You have too many commitments (e.g. SMTP, biology, third language, council etc.)
-
Lack of focus, easily distracted
-
Poor time management
As a RESULT
> Unable to complete homework and submit in time
> Unable to complete what is required for the next day like projects or assignments
> Fail to prioritise what is more important
> Cannot choose which aspect to commit more time to and which to commit less
the Negative Emotion
Disappointed when unable to finish one’s work, since you feel sad for failing to complete a certain task, due to another major commitment
Feeling the increased stress of coping with school work due to an commitments
What you CAN DO
1) Learn to sort out your priorities
It is difficult to commit many aspects all at once. Decide which aspect you should spend time with
2) Commit to a certain activity especially when the day which tests your proficiency in it is drawing near
Commit to your CCA when competition is near
Commit to council when planning an event etc.
Do not commit all at once. If will only increase your workload
3) Manage your time well especially when your schedule is packed.
Ensure that you commit one activity at a time. It is never healthy to overdo and over-exert youself
Create a timetable and plan what you should do everyday. Follow the timetable, which should not be packed, but at least well organised
You can effectively keep track of your daily work, thus not losing out
4) Discipline yourself to complete what is required before the deadline.
As time is crucial, never delay. Otherwise, overlapping of workload will appear.
The most simple task is to complete homework that is given within the week
This will help clear a major part (homework) of the commitments in school life.
5) Know your limits and sign up for programmes if you are sure you are able to cope with them.
There are ample opportunities for you to shine, but being obssessed in shining will result in a heavy and unbalanced workload.
6) Learn to give up some of the programmes if you are unable to balance your workload.
It may turn out to be a good thing when you have more time to commit to other things.
For example, withdraw from biology if you are not attaining the right results even though you spend time in it. Perhaps it is not your ideal subject, and it is causing your workload to be heavy and unbalanced.
7) Seek advice from your friends and teachers on how to balance your workload.
They will be able to understand your troubles and provide alternatives or suggestions to ensure your school life is smooth.
